    Growth through Innovation:

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has an innovative, flexible and unique approach to shipping that has allowed the company to grow significantly over the last twenty years. Founded in
1970, MSC is now the biggest user of the South African ports and by 2003 was the second biggest container carrier in the world, operating in excess of 420 container vessels.

MSC provides global coverage, linking South Africa directly with Europe, UK, USA, Asia, Middle East, Far East and Australia as well as the key ports of Africa’s West Coast, East Coast and

the Indian Ocean Islands, Madagascar and Mozambique. MSC’s dramatic growth over the past

decade that can be attributed to two things: the quality management system that aims

at consistently improving upon service levels within the shipping community and MSC’s willingness to initiate change to meet the requirements of clients and principals.

    South African Investments

MSC has significant investments in the South African property market, with instantly recognisable office

buildings worth R220-million in Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg and Pretoria. The Italian Village in Umhlanga Ridge was built to accommodate MSC’s Italian personnel and their families,

and comprises seven houses, a crèche and day care centre. Built in 1996, this complex is currently valued at R30 million

    Technical Expertise

MSC’s hugely successful technical division, which was expanded in 1998, operates a world class, full scale engine repair and maintenance facility, which is headed up by a team of highly trained Italian and South African technicians and has a staff complement of over one hundred members.

MSC has successfully diversified into the business of container depots, all of which have Custom bond facilities. These are situated in Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg, East London and Rosslyn,

Pretoria. Rosslyn boasts its own rail siding as facilitating clients’ access to their manufacturing plants, a particularly critical issue for the motoring industry.

    Social Responsibility

The Port Elizabeth depot is situated in the Nelson Mandela Park, near Uitenhage. The port of Ngquru, 30km outside Port Elizabeth was opened in October 2009. In order to help Transnet achieve the volumes

needed to justify the construction costs, and despite additional direct costs, MSC committed to moving large tonnages through this port. The Port was officially opened by President Jacob Zuma March

2012, by which time MSC vessels had made 455 port calls handling a total of 664 304 Teus.

MSC also controls a fleet of 2300 trailers nd 125 trucks, which combined with a fleet of 400 owner-driver vehicles, are able to deliver a door to door service within 24 hours from the container being landed

from MSC. MSC has assisted in the upgrading of ommunity hospitals, churches and chools, and has placed special emphasis n Aids awareness.
