African Renaissance Conference 2017

African Renaissance Conference Overview

The people win when we work together

The African Renaissance Festival kicked off 1999, as a think-tank, where thoughts, ideas, skills and knowledge could be channelled towards development programmes. At the time, the organising committee interacted mainly with civic movements, as it tried to capture the imagination and support of a broader audience of role-players.

The festival has since gained considerable ground, having engaged with KwaZulu-Natal’s provincial government, launching programmes together that are integrated and conceptualised around African Renaissance ideals. As such, the African Renaissance programme remains a leading example of how provincial government, local government and civil society can work together towards the building of the Province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Having become one of the flagship projects on the province’s annual calendar, the festival plays a decisive role in bridging the gap between government planners and the aspirations of communities at grassroots level. It is heartening to see a wave of co-ordination between the government of KwaZulu-Natal and the African Renaissance Organising Committee, eThekwini Municipality, and various stakeholders, including intellectuals, civil society, corporates and the African-American delegation.
